Lent

The year I played at being Catholic

I lamented how slowly the weeks moved

toward Holy Saturday;

the baker complaining—

no one buys bread anymore—

the merchant’s cellars full with wine.

All day I was hungry for more than food.

And on the walk home not once did the girl I liked

say anything as the tar turned to sand

and the road narrowed to potholes and dirt.

Two bodies hummed loudly in the quiet night.

Hunger sharpened wanting

intention slowly turned to ash in the mouth,

so we lifted our palms and touched briefly,

until the cant of a mother

on a not-dark-enough street

measured the distance between us.
